The Traditional NI-DAQ Compatibility VIs allow you to run LabVIEW applications written in Traditional NI-DAQ on devices that are only supported by NI-DAQmx. The Compatibility VIs replace certain Traditional NI-DAQ VI libraries with libraries that work with both Traditional NI-DAQ and NI-DAQmx. These VIs look identical to the existing Traditional NI-DAQ VIs and integrate seamlessly into existing applications.

If your DAQ device is supported in Traditional NI-DAQ, the Traditional NI-DAQ Compatibility VIs do not alter your program. In such a case, your application continues to use the Traditional NI-DAQ driver. If your DAQ device is supported only by NI-DAQmx, the VIs are redirected to use NI-DAQmx to communicate with and control your device. This redirection happens at the lowest subVI level. Therefore, you do not have to make any changes to your program. However, you do have to specifically configure your NI-DAQ devices in the Measurement and Application Explorer to be recognized by the Compatibility VIs.

The Traditional NI-DAQ Compatibility VIs support the following:

• All existing functionality for devices supported by Traditional NI-DAQ
• Analog input, analog output and software timed digital I/O operations on hardware that is only supported by NI-DAQmx. Counter operations are NOT supported
• NI signal conditioning platforms, such as SCXI and SCC, are NOT supported
• LabVIEW only (LabVIEW RT is NOT supported)
• Windows only (the version of Windows supported depends on the version of NI-DAQ installed)
• English only. These VIs have not been localized for any other language interfaces.

Traditional NI-DAQ Compatibility VIs Installation Instructions:

1. Before installing the Traditional NI-DAQ Compatibility VIs, you must have both LabVIEW 7.x and NI-DAQ 7.2 or later (Traditional NI-DAQ and NI-DAQmx) installed on the system.
2. To install the Compatibility VIs, first create a temporary folder on your local hard drive.
3. Extract the Compatibility VIs zip file for your version of LabVIEW into the folder created in Step 1. This will create the installation files necessary for installing the Compatibility VIs.
4. To launch the installer, run the Setup.exe program created in Step 3.

The installer creates a backup folder of the original NI-DAQ libraries it overwrites and stores them in the vi.lib/Daq/Compatibility VIs Backup Files directory. It renames the backups with a numbered .bak extension. The installer also installs a copy of the CompatibilityVIs.chm Help file into this backup folder and a link to it to the National Instruments\NI-DAQ Start Menu directory.
