Supported Devices and Platforms

NI-Sync 3.0 supports the PXI-6651, PXI-6652, PXI-6653, PXIe-6672, and PCI-1588.

NI-Sync 3.0 supports Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 or later, Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later, Windows Vista (the 32-bit version) and Windows Vista x64 (the 64-bit version).

NI-Sync 3.0 supports LabVIEW 7.1.1 or later.

NI-Sync 3.0 and the NI PXI-665x and PXIe-6672 devices support LabVIEW RT 7.1.1 or later.

Note: The PCI-1588 products are not supported under LabVIEW RT or Microsoft Windows Vista x64.

Changes from NI-Sync 2.x to 3.0

NI-Sync 3.0 uses NI DAQmx software technology for better system integration. Some changes include:

  • Routes made through NI-Sync are now protected and must be disconnected before another route can be made to the same destination.
  • NI-Sync devices now show up as DAQmx devices in NI Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX). You can use either the NI-VISA or NI-DAQmx device names as a resource name.
  • VISA Resource names have been updated to IVI Logical controls.
  • The API now supports time references including IEEE-1588, IRIG, PPS, and GPS.
  • Time reference protocols are now started at boot and do not need to be started or stopped manually.
  • You can now configure your Time Reference boards through MAX for operations on startup.
  • The NI-Sync functions Get Clock Connection Info, Get Trigger Connection Info, and Get SW Trigger Connection Info have been deprecated, removed from the LabVIEW palette, may not be supported in future versions of NI-Sync, and are not recommended for new programs.
  • Added support for the PXIe-6672.
Notes on NI-Sync Examples in the LabVIEW Example Finder

The hierarchy of NI-Sync examples has changed. Signal-based examples that use clocks and triggers directly are under Hardware Input and Output»Timing and Synchronization»Signal-Based. Examples that use time protocols such as IEEE 1588 or GPS as a basis for synchronization are under Hardware Input and Output»Timing and Synchronization»Time-Based.

Examples that use NI-Sync with other hardware have moved online to ni.com/examples.

NI-Sync API Notes

Due to a known issue with LabVIEW 7.0 and 7.1, the LabVIEW Time Stamp type reaches its maximum value in the year 2038. This issue affects 1588 operations when the 1588 time is in the year 2038. This issue has been fixed in LabVIEW 8.0 and above.

1588-Specific Release Notes

Due to a known networking issue on Microsoft Windows 2000, you can install only one NI PCI-1588 at a time. In addition, the NI PCI-1588 or PXI-6682 must be specified as the primary network interface and have the lowest metric number. Follow these steps to configure this in the Network Control Panel:

1. Go to the Network and Dial-up Connections panel under the Control Panel.
2. Right-click a particular network interface and select the Properties tab. This opens the Connection Properties window associated with that NIC.
3. Highlight the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) selection in the components list and click the Properties button. This opens the TCP/IP properties panel associated with the NIC.
4. Click the Advanced button. This opens the Advanced TCP/IP Settings panel.
5. Enter the desired metric number. The number indicates the routing cost associated with using the NIC. A higher number indicates higher cost.

You must complete these five steps for each network adapter in the Network and Dial-up Connections panel and enter metric numbers such that the AMD PCNET NIC associated with your NI PCI-1588 has the lowest metric number and is not tied with any other NIC.

This issue has been fixed in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 and later.

To avoid a potential hang when running Microsoft Windows 2000, you must restart the system after the Add New Hardware Wizard recognizes the NI PCI-1588. This requirement does not apply to Microsoft Windows XP.

RT-Specific Release Notes

Due to a known issue it may be necessary to add a delay to the beginning of a Startup LabVIEW RT VI. For more information reference KnowledgeBase 4CR9M98P.

Installationshinweise

Download and run the NI-Sync3.0.exe which is a self-extracting executable to start the NI-Sync installation.
